Patients at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital are facing serious difficulties as intern doctors continue their strike following an attack on a female intern doctor.
The work stoppage has now lasted over 24 hours after talks with hospital authorities failed to resolve the issue. On Sunday morning, doctors said they had entered a second round of discussions with hospital officials.
Md Ramzan Mia from Habiganj, whose newborn was admitted with jaundice, described the struggle: “We haven’t been able to find any doctor since the scuffle on Friday night. Tests were prescribed, but for the past two days no one has checked them. We are poor—what are we supposed to do?”
Juned Ahmed from Beanibazar, whose wife had a Caesarean delivery, shared similar concerns: “Since yesterday, no doctors have been available. Treatment is continuing based on earlier prescriptions. We’ll see what happens today.”
The strike began after a Friday night altercation in Surgery Ward No. 4 escalated into a clash, leaving at least five people injured, including the female doctor. Police intervened to restore order.
On Saturday, senior hospital officials, including the director, met with the protesting interns. After nearly an hour of talks, the interns announced they would continue their strike.
