Despite regular imports from India, onion prices at Dinajpur’s Hili land port have surged by Tk10-12 per kilogram over the past three days. This spike is primarily due to reduced local supply and increased demand for imported onions, causing frustration among wholesalers and consumers struggling with the sudden cost hike. Importers attribute the temporary rise to Diwali market closures in India and expect prices to stabilize within a week. On Saturday, 991 tons of onions, including Indore, Nashik, South, and Nagar varieties, arrived from India in 34 trucks. Nashik onions were sold at Tk100 per kg at the port, up from Tk90-95 three days prior. The South and Nagar varieties sold for Tk98-100, while the Indore variety increased to Tk95 per kg, compared to Tk85 three days ago.
