Samer O Matter, a medical intern in Barishal, has lived in Bangladesh for over six years, unable to return to his family in Gaza due to ongoing conflict and border closures. Growing up in the al-Nuseirat refugee camp, Samer and his peers, like classmates Shukri and Nassrallah, faced repeated trauma from Israeli airstrikes since 2008. Now, with Gaza under a complete blockade since March 2025, communication with their families is rare and filled with fear.
Despite the hardships, these Palestinian students see education as a form of resistance, believing it empowers them to defend their homeland. Most are studying medicine or dentistry in Bangladesh, supported by scholarships and community guidance. However, the war has destroyed 93% of Gaza’s schools and targeted healthcare workers, killing over 1,000 doctors and nurses since October 2023. Even after completing their degrees, returning home remains uncertain.
The students, though heartbroken, remain determined to one day serve their people. They express gratitude for Bangladesh's support, especially during recent pro-Palestine rallies. As they wait and pray for a ceasefire, they hold on to hope for a peaceful return and a chance to rebuild their homeland.
