PBI Recommends Dropping Charges Against Sheikh Hasina and 113 Others in Dhanmondi July Uprising Case
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has recommended dropping charges against Sheikh Hasina and 113 others, including her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, former minister Hasan Mahmud, and several other political leaders, in the attempted murder case of Sahed Ali and nine others during the July uprising, citing the inability to locate the victims. This information was confirmed by sources at the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court.
The case, originally filed on 3 September 2024 at Dhanmondi Police Station, relates to an incident on 4 August 2024, when Sahed Ali was injured in front of Mina Bazar, Dhanmondi 27, on his way home from work at Shymanta Square. Nine others, including students from Dhaka College and City College, were also injured. Sahed Ali’s alleged brother, Sharif, filed the case naming 114 individuals, including the current Prime Minister. Four suspects were arrested during the initial investigation by the police, after which the case was handed over to the PBI.
During the investigation, PBI Inspector Shahjahan Bhuiyan could not locate the victims. Notices and letters were sent to hospitals, Dhaka College, City College, and Shymanta Square to obtain victim statements and medical reports. Attempts to contact the complainant, Sharif, were also unsuccessful, and verification revealed inconsistencies in the names and addresses provided. Even after personal contact near Dhanmondi Lake, the complainant did not present the injured parties or submit medical documentation.
Based on these findings, the PBI has recommended dropping charges against Sheikh Hasina and the other 113 accused, and submitted the report to the court. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for 3 February 2026.
