Bangladesh Bank is set to introduce a new series of currency notes highlighting national heritage, culture, and history, replacing traditional portraits with symbolic imagery. These redesigned notes, to be released gradually from May 27 and after Eid, will exclude full images of any individual, including Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Instead, they will feature visuals such as the martyrs of the July Revolution, youth representation, the Sundarbans, and religious and historical landmarks.
The 20 taka note, releasing on May 27, will feature images of Kantaji Temple and a Buddhist temple. The 50 taka note, showing Zainul Abedin’s famine painting and Atia Mosque, is expected around May 29 or 30. The 1000 taka note, with Bangabhaban and the National Memorial, will arrive on June 2. The 5 taka note, with images of Abu Sayed and Mugdho, has been delayed until after Eid due to late paper arrivals from Europe.
Other upcoming notes include the 10 taka note with youth unity and Baitul Mukarram Mosque, the 100 taka note with Sundarbans wildlife, the 200 taka note symbolizing religious diversity, and the 500 taka note featuring Ahsan Manzil. Initial plans to release the notes before Eid-ul-Fitr failed due to the time required for international procurement and design.
