Lutfullahel Majed, the newly elected MP of Mymensingh-8 (Ishwarganj), has announced that legal action will be taken against anyone collecting unauthorized fees in the local markets of his constituency. He made the announcement on his verified Facebook page around 8 PM on Tuesday, shortly after taking the oath as a Member of Parliament.
The post quickly went viral, with 147 shares by 8 AM the next morning and at least 877 comments welcoming the initiative.
In his post, the BNP MP wrote: “All markets in Ishwarganj must display a chart of fees before collecting them. Fees for marginal farmers should not exceed 5 percent. Market traders must unite regarding fees. No one should pay fees until the chart is displayed. Anyone collecting fees beyond the rules will face legal action as soon as proof is available.”
Teachers and residents have expressed strong support. Habibur Rahman, a teacher at Borohit High School, commented, “Alhamdulillah. The people of Ishwarganj are proud to have a leader like you. Your pro-people initiative may face opposition, but your strength lies in the support and love of the people. Keep moving forward with trust in Allah.”
Ehsanul Haque Abid added, “Could the market committee consider waiving fees below a minimum amount? Many poor, elderly, and needy people come to the market selling just a few bananas, a coconut, or two fruits to buy essential items. Charging even 10 taka on a 50 or 100 taka sale is inhumane.”
Anowarul Haque also wrote, “Your initiative is truly commendable. Protecting the interests of marginal farmers is our moral duty. We will all follow this rule together.”
