Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly plans to propose a full reoccupation of the Gaza Strip, according to several Israeli media outlets. The move would involve Israel taking control of Gaza’s internal affairs, including its education and healthcare systems, as well as managing the movement of people and goods. This would mark a significant policy shift for Israel and a potential blow to U.S.-backed plans for post-war governance involving Arab nations.
Currently, Israel controls Gaza’s airspace, maritime access, and most border crossings, but does not have direct control over internal civil institutions. Netanyahu’s proposal would effectively reverse Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from the territory.
Meanwhile, fighting continues across Gaza. The Israeli military says it is targeting Hamas infrastructure in areas like Rafah, Gaza City, and Khan Younis. On Sunday, 86 people were reportedly killed, bringing the total Palestinian death toll to over 38,000, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Thousands more are injured or missing.
Since the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas-led militants — which killed around 1,200 people and saw more than 250 taken hostage — Israel has vowed to dismantle the group. According to Israeli figures, over 100 hostages are still held in Gaza.
