In Mymensingh, police faced an attack by associates of a suspect while attempting to arrest him in connection with a case. During the assault, Ariful Islam (26) was freed from police custody along with his handcuffs by his supporters. Five police officers, including the case’s investigating officer, were injured in the attack.
The incident occurred around 4:00 PM on Tuesday near Digharkanda Fishery Mor in the city. Security forces, including RAB and the army, later patrolled the area to restore order.
Police have arrested Sagar Ali (50), Ariful’s father, who allegedly led the attack against law enforcement.
According to authorities, on 10 January, Ariful Islam and his associates severely injured a local man, Md. Rasel, by beating and stabbing him. Rasel is currently receiving treatment at the National Orthopedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute in Dhaka. Following the attack, Rasel’s family filed a case at Kotwali Model Police Station on 11 January, naming eight individuals and 10–12 unknown persons as defendants.
On Tuesday afternoon, a five-member police team led by Sub-Inspector Farid Ahmed conducted a raid in Digharkanda and arrested Ariful Islam. While bringing him into custody, more than a hundred people, led by Ariful’s father Sagar Ali, attacked the police with sticks and homemade weapons. In the chaos, they freed Ariful from handcuffs and escaped.
Arrests and Cases:
Following the incident, police filed a case against 159 individuals, with ASI Ariful Islam as the complainant. The case names 29 people specifically and 140 others as unknown suspects.
Police have so far arrested seven people in connection with the attack. They will be produced in court on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrested individuals are: Md. Sagar Ali Haji (60), his son A.K.M. Rezaul Karim (35), Sujan Mia (27) and his brother Nazim Uddin (37), Md. Zainal Uddin (42), Md. Khalilur Rahman (40), and Md. Nazim Uddin (42). All are residents of Digharkanda.
Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Model Police Station, Md. Nazmus Sakib, confirmed that a case has been filed over the attack on police officers, and seven individuals have been arrested and will be presented in court today.
