A money exchange businessman was shot and robbed of Tk 22 lakh in local and foreign currency during a daring daylight attack in Dhaka's Mirpur this morning.
The victim, 55-year-old Jahidul Islam, owner of Mahmud Money Exchange, was seriously injured and is now undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, according to Mirpur Model Police Station OC Sajjad Rumon.
Jahidul was heading to his office in Mirpur-10 from his residence in Section 6, carrying the money with him. Around 10:00am, six unidentified assailants on two motorcycles intercepted him on Abdul Baten Road, police said, quoting family sources.
When Jahidul resisted handing over the money, one of the attackers shot him in the waist. The gang then snatched the bag of cash and fled the scene.
Locals rushed him to a nearby hospital before he was transferred to Suhrawardy Medical for further treatment.
Police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) officers have since visited the scene and are reviewing CCTV footage to track down the culprits.
