Meta is signaling a major shift in social media usage by planning separate premium subscriptions for WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook. These new subscriptions will be distinct from the current Meta Verified service and may include limited exclusive features for regular users.
While WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook have long been free, rising demand for AI-powered features and increased investment in artificial intelligence has prompted Meta to explore alternative revenue streams. Reports suggest the new premium plan may include advanced AI-based tools.
A key feature could be Meta’s “Manus AI Agent”, offering smart replies, content creation support, and automation. On Instagram, AI-driven tools like “Vibes” may allow users to create short, creative videos. Long-requested features, such as seeing who doesn’t follow back and viewing stories discreetly, might also be added. WhatsApp could see enhanced chat functions, customization options, and AI-powered capabilities.
Meta has emphasized that the premium subscription is entirely optional. Users who do not wish to pay can continue using all three apps for free. The plan primarily targets those interested in extra features and advanced AI tools.
The move has also raised privacy concerns, especially following ads on WhatsApp, with users questioning whether personal data will be used for AI training. Meta assures that user data protection policies will remain unchanged.
It is still unclear how many users will pay for the premium subscription, but experts say Meta’s initiative could mark a new chapter in the social media business model.
