Begum Matia Chowdhury, a member of the Awami League's Presidium, has passed away. She died this afternoon (Wednesday) while receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, with hospital general manager Arif Mahmud confirming her death around 1 PM. Born on June 30, 1942, in Pirojpur, Matia Chowdhury became involved in student politics at Eden College and was elected president of the Bangladesh Student Union in 1965. Known as the 'Agni Kanya' (Daughter of Fire), she joined the East Pakistan National Awami Party in 1967 and became a member of its executive committee. Matia was actively engaged in Bangladesh's independence movement and provided advocacy and care for the injured from 1970 until mid-1971.
