Ferdousi Akter Mariya, a 19-year-old from Pirganj, Rangpur, has made history as the first Bangladeshi woman to complete the Ironman 70.3 Malaysia, achieving an impressive second-place finish in October 2024. Coming from a conservative family with limited means, Mariya's journey is one of determination and resilience. She began her athletic career playing football at a young age, later joining BKSP, where she honed her skills. Despite financial constraints and facing opposition, she trained creatively, using makeshift equipment like water gallons to stay in peak condition. With the encouragement of mentors and friends, Mariya excelled in half-marathons and even overcame her lack of swimming experience to conquer the triathlon. Supported by mentors, friends, and sponsors who recognized her talent, her success highlights the power of community and self-belief. Now, Mariya’s ambitions reach further—she aims to compete in the Ironman World Championship, Olympic triathlons, and long-distance swims. Her journey stands as a powerful example for athletes and dreamers alike, proving that obstacles can be overcome with perseverance and support.
