Malta, the European island nation, has officially declared its intention to recognize the State of Palestine. Prime Minister Robert Abela made the announcement, as reported by the national news outlet Malta Times in a report published on Monday (May 26).
Prime Minister Abela stated that Malta will formally recognize the State of Palestine next month, reinforcing the country’s position on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Addressing the situation, he emphasized that Malta cannot remain indifferent to the immense human suffering caused by the conflict.
In a compassionate move, Prime Minister Abela also expressed Malta’s willingness to provide shelter to the surviving members of a Palestinian family devastated by an Israeli airstrike. The strike, which took place on Friday (May 24) local time, targeted the home of two doctors—Hamdi Al-Najjar and his wife, Alaa Al-Najjar—in Khan Yunis, Gaza.
According to the Gaza Civil Defense Agency, the airstrike killed nine of the couple’s ten children. Hospital sources confirmed that Dr. Al-Najjar’s husband and their 11-year-old son, the only survivors of the attack, were both critically injured.
Prime Minister Abela stated, “Malta is ready to welcome the family of Hamdi Al-Najjar and Alaa Al-Najjar, and we will embrace them as if they were members of our own family.”
