The National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate fined Syed Khairuzzaman, owner of Messrs General Gas House, Tk 100,000 for selling LPG gas at prices higher than the government-set rate.
The fine was imposed during a raid conducted around 12:30 pm on Sunday (January 4) at the company’s warehouse in the Doarpara area of the town. During the inspection, authorities found a large stock of gas and evidence of selling LPG above the fixed price.
Officials also noted the absence of adequate fire safety measures at the warehouse and the owner’s failure to present proper documents for gas storage as per the license. As a result, the penalty was imposed under the Consumer Rights Protection Act.
According to the directorate, the government-fixed price of a 12kg LPG cylinder is Tk 1,253, but the company was selling each cylinder at Tk 80 more.
Sajal Ahmed, Assistant Director of the Magura District Consumer Rights Protection Directorate, said all businesses have been instructed to sell gas at government-set prices, adding that the official price has not been increased. He also said such operations will continue regularly to protect consumer interests. Law enforcement personnel were present during the operation.
