In Madaripur, a man was seriously injured after his wife allegedly attacked him with a blade while he was asleep, reportedly in protest against his second marriage. The victim, 35-year-old Naim Matubber, also known as Habib, an overseas worker in Italy, was targeted by his wife, 29-year-old Shiuli Begum, at their home in Diyabari, Kunia Union, on Friday around 4 a.m.
According to police and local sources, Naim and Shiuli married about 10 years ago. Soon after, conflicts arose over extramarital issues and family disputes. About four months ago, Naim returned from Italy and subsequently married another woman without Shiuli’s consent, escalating tensions between the couple. On Friday night, an argument broke out again. Shiuli allegedly spiked Naim’s food with sleeping pills. Once he was unconscious, she used a blade to severely injure his genitals.
Family members rushed Naim to Madaripur 250-Bed District Hospital. He was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Dr. Riyad Mahmud confirmed that the blade caused severe genital injury, though the organ was not fully severed, and Naim was moved to the surgical department for further care.
Naim’s sister-in-law, Shefali Begum, said he was scheduled to return to Italy in four days, but the attack has left him hospitalized.
Abul Kalam Azad, Officer-in-Charge of Madaripur Sadar Police, stated that Shiuli admitted to the attack, which was prompted by her husband’s second marriage. She has been detained, and the case is under police investigation.
