Former state minister for home affairs, Lutfozzaman Babar, was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj today after serving 17 years in prison. Babar walked out around 1:45 pm, as confirmed by his brother-in-law, Shadot Rahman, and Brigadier General Syed Md Motaher Hossain, the inspector general of prisons, who mentioned that all formalities had been completed for his release. Family members, party leaders, and supporters had gathered outside the jail in anticipation of the event. Babar was acquitted of all charges against him, including those related to the notorious 10-truck arms haul. With no legal obstacles remaining, his release went forward smoothly.
