The final giraffe at Gazipur Safari Park has passed away, leaving the park without any giraffes or kangaroos. Park officials reported that the adult female giraffe had been suffering from tuberculosis for an extended period and was under continuous care by a six-member medical team. Despite ongoing treatment, the animal succumbed on Thursday afternoon, 23 October, and following a post-mortem examination, it was buried within the park premises.
According to a general diary (GD) filed at Sreepur Police Station on Friday, the giraffe died around 4 pm. Veterinary specialists from Bangladesh Agricultural University, along with the park’s medical team, confirmed that tuberculosis was the cause of death. Officer-in-Charge of Sreepur Police Station, Md Abdul Barik, stated, “Legal action will be taken after completing the investigation.”
Gazipur Safari Park, established in 2013 across 3,690 acres of land, was once home to a wide variety of rare species, including lions, tigers, zebras, and kangaroos. However, in recent years, the park has faced numerous challenges, including repeated animal deaths, theft, and poor management. Park Officer Tariq Rahman remarked, “The last giraffe had been battling TB for a long time. Despite continuous efforts and treatment by our medical team, we were unable to save her.”
The death of the park’s last giraffe highlights ongoing concerns about animal health and management at Gazipur Safari Park, raising questions about the future care of its remaining wildlife.
