Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe has made sporting history by becoming the first athlete to break the fabled two-hour barrier in a marathon, winning the London Marathon in 1:59:30 on Sunday and shattering the previous world record by 65 seconds.
Ethiopia’s Yom Kecha finished second in 1:59:41 in his debut marathon, while Uganda’s Jacob Kipimo also set a new benchmark, clocking 2:00:28 to better the previous record set by Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum in Chicago in 2023 by seven seconds.
The 29-year-old Sawe, who retained his title in London, thanked the large crowds lining the streets of the British capital for their support.
