Kazi Nazrul Islam, widely regarded as Bangladesh's national poet, has been officially recognized by the state. A government notification confirmed his designation as the national poet, effective from his return to Bangladesh on May 4, 1972. The decision, approved by the Advisory Council in December, was later published in the official gazette. On May 24, 1972, with government support, Kazi Nazrul Islam was brought to Dhaka from Kolkata and settled in Dhanmondi. He became a Bangladeshi citizen in January 1976 and was honored with the Ekushey Padak on February 21, 1976, along with an honorary D.Litt degree from Dhaka University.
