A joint force, including the Army, Police, RAB, and BGB, raided the Haji Mazar slum in Tongi, Gazipur, known as a hub for wholesale drug trading. The operation, which started around 7 pm on Saturday (March 1) and ended at 9 pm, led to the arrest of 60 individuals, including drug dealers and known criminals.
Gazipur Executive Magistrate Md. Raihanul Islam stated that drugs and money were also recovered during the raid. Authorities suspect the slum's involvement in crimes like kidnapping and robbery. He confirmed that similar operations would continue throughout Ramadan.
The Haji Mazar slum has long been a hotspot for drug distribution, supplying various substances, including Yaba, marijuana, and Phensedyl, to Dhaka, Gazipur, and other parts of the country. A government source revealed that the raid was based on intelligence regarding a recent major drug transaction in Cox’s Bazar.
Tongi West Police OC Iskandar Habibur Rahman mentioned that further details will be available once the case is filed.
