On May 30, in Tokyo, the governments of Japan and Bangladesh finalized an agreement through which Japan will provide a total of $1.063 billion to Bangladesh. This financial assistance is intended for various purposes, including budget support, railway infrastructure development, and educational scholarships.
As part of the agreement, $418 million will be allocated as a Development Policy Loan aimed at backing Bangladesh’s ongoing economic reforms and enhancing its climate resilience initiatives.
In addition to this, Japan will extend a loan of $641 million dedicated to upgrading the railway segment between Joydevpur and Ishwardi. The project involves converting this section into a dual-gauge double railway track to improve connectivity and transportation efficiency.
Furthermore, the agreement includes a grant of $4.2 million designated for scholarships to support educational opportunities for Bangladeshi students. The entire agreement was officially endorsed through an exchange of notes between the two governments, marking a significant step in bilateral cooperation.
