An Israeli soldier, Cpt. Ido Voloch, and a police officer, Sgt. Neta Yitzhak Kahane, were killed during clashes with Hamas in Gaza City's Shejaiya neighborhood on Friday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had set up an ambush in the area, and the fatalities occurred after Hamas operatives attacked. Voloch died from RPG fire, while Kahane was killed in a firefight. The IDF also suffered additional casualties, with a soldier injured in an RPG attack and two others wounded later in the same area.
The IDF has warned that if hostage talks with Hamas fail, it will intensify its offensive. Currently, three IDF divisions are operating in Gaza. Israel is also considering establishing a humanitarian zone in southern Gaza to deliver aid to Palestinians, with plans to set up a tent city and allow humanitarian aid deliveries. Since March 18, the IDF has targeted over 1,800 sites in Gaza, killing over 400 Hamas members.
The war, which began after Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties on both sides. Over 51,000 Palestinians have died, while Israel's toll stands at 414, including soldiers, police officers, and civilian contractors.
