An imam of a mosque has been killed in Uttar Pradesh, India, after allegedly being pushed from a moving train.
According to a report by The Indian Express published on Saturday (May 2), the incident took place on April 27 in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. Police initially believed that the victim had died after falling from the train. However, they later discovered evidence suggesting that he was assaulted on board before being thrown off.
The deceased, identified as Maulana Tausif Raza, was an imam at a mosque. His family has released an audio recording, reportedly made during a phone call, in which he can be heard saying that he was being harassed by some individuals on the train.
The family stated that they will file a murder case on Sunday (May 3). His uncle said they believe he was tortured inside the train before being thrown out.
In the audio, Tausif is heard telling his wife, Tabassum, that he is being harassed and intends to inform the police. In a related video statement, Tabassum said her husband told her he was being falsely accused of theft and assault. She advised him to seek help from other passengers.
Police initially informed the family that he had fallen from the train along with his luggage, but the new audio evidence has raised suspicions of murder.
