Dr. Muhammad Yunus, head of Bangladesh's interim government, has called for an investigation into Tulip Siddiq’s property in London. He suggested that if evidence confirms she profited from the extensive corruption during Sheikh Hasina’s administration, she should be returned to Bangladesh to face trial. In an interview with The Sunday Times on Saturday, Dr. Yunus also remarked that Tulip should issue an apology.
Recent reports in several international media outlets have alleged that Tulip Siddiq was gifted a free apartment in London by allies of the ousted Awami League government.
Currently serving as the UK’s Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Tulip Siddiq oversees anti-corruption efforts in the financial sector. She is the daughter of Sheikh Rehana, sister of Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh. In response to Dr. Yunus’s remarks, Kemi Badenoch, a UK Conservative Party leader, demanded Tulip Siddiq’s removal as Treasury Minister. Posting on social media platform X, Kemi said, "Keir Starmer must immediately sack Tulip Siddiq."
She criticized, "The Prime Minister appointed his friend to lead the fight against corruption, yet that minister now faces corruption allegations herself."
Kemi further claimed that Tulip has become a distraction for the government, adding, "The government should prioritize addressing the economic issues they have caused."
As grounds for her dismissal, Kemi highlighted, "Bangladesh’s interim government has raised serious concerns about her ties to Sheikh Hasina’s regime."
