Claiming to be a member of a family of martyred freedom fighters, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman expressed regret, saying, “My brother gave his life, and I believe that if he saw the Bangladesh of today, he might not have joined the Liberation War back then.”
He made the remarks on Saturday (February 7) at 11:00 am during his keynote speech at an election rally organized by the 11-party alliance at New Field Ground in Habiganj.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, “Those who risked and sacrificed their lives to give us freedom—how has this country, its people, political parties, and leaders honored them? Their dream was to establish a Bangladesh of justice and equality, where people would achieve economic freedom and children would receive quality education. But none of this has happened. Is the ordinary citizen to blame? Absolutely not.”
He added, “Those who have repeatedly had the opportunity to govern the country—if they did something good, that is their credit. Any wrongdoing is also their responsibility. I will not say that nothing good has been done. But why does the fate of ordinary citizens not improve, while the fortunes of people in other countries change with the touch of the hands of their citizens? The main reason for this failure is dishonest leadership.”
