During a virtual address at an event in New York, Sheikh Hasina accused Muhammad Yunus of orchestrating "gen*ocide" and failing to protect religious minorities, including Hindus. She also alleged there were plots to assassinate her and her sister, Sheikh Rehana, akin to the fate of their father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. This marked Sheikh Hasina's first public speech since seeking refuge in India following her resignation in August amid widespread anti-government protests. She had previously commented on the overall political climate in Bangladesh. Referring to the events of August 5, when armed protesters stormed her official residence in Dhaka, Hasina recounted, "The protesters were directed towards Ganabhaban. If the security guards had opened fire, many lives would have been lost. It was a matter of 25-30 minutes, and I was compelled to leave. I instructed them not to fire, no matter what happened." Addressing accusations of "genocide" against her, Hasina claimed, "Yunus has been involved in genocide through a meticulously planned approach. The masterminds, including student coordinators and Yunus, are responsible for this." She further criticized the current ruling government in Dhaka for failing to protect minority communities. "Hindus, Buddhists, Christians—none have been spared. Eleven churches have been destroyed, temples and Buddhist shrines vandalized. When Hindus protested, the Iskcon leader was arrested," she said, referencing the detention of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das. "What is the reason for this relentless persecution of minorities? Why are they being attacked so ruthlessly?" she asked, adding, "Justice has become unattainable for the people... I never even had the chance to formally resign."
