A childhood marked by poverty, hardship, and deep uncertainty gradually transformed into a story of hope, care, and dignity through education, love, and humanity. The life of Purnima Akhter Sumi, a girl from Dinajpur, has become a powerful real-life example of inspiration.
Sumi was born to Maqbul Hossain and Sahara Banu, both agricultural laborers in Dinajpur. Coming from a financially struggling family with many children, her parents faced severe difficulties in providing for them. Under such circumstances, young Sumi was sent to work as a domestic helper in Bogra.
However, instead of finding safety or comfort, she allegedly endured severe physical and mental abuse. As the situation worsened, her parents eventually sought help from the then Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nawabganj Police Station, Imtiaz Sajeeb. After reviewing the matter, he took immediate action to rescue the child and arranged for her to be placed under the care of her elder brother, Traffic Inspector Anwar Kabir Sujan, in Dhaka.
From that moment, Sumi’s life began to change. Anwar Kabir Sujan and his family embraced her as their own daughter. For the past 13 years, they have not only provided her shelter but also raised her with affection, ensured her education, and supported her journey toward building a stable and dignified life.
Eventually, a new chapter unfolded in Sumi’s life. Her marriage to Touhidul Islam from Rangpur was solemnized in a grand ceremony at a reputed restaurant in Gaibandha.
The wedding was attended by guests from various professions, including teachers, doctors, politicians, police officials, and journalists, reflecting the significance of the occasion.
Many attendees described the event as a remarkable example of humanity and compassion—showing how a child once deprived of safety and care due to family hardship was later raised with love and respect and sent into a new life with dignity.
Sumi and her husband, Touhidul Islam, sought prayers and blessings from everyone as they begin their married life together.
Meanwhile, her foster guardian, Anwar Kabir Sujan and his family, went beyond arranging the wedding. They also provided essential household items, including furniture, a refrigerator, and a television, to help the new couple start their life smoothly.
They expressed emotionally, “Our responsibility does not end with the wedding. Sumi will always remain our daughter. We will stand beside this couple for life.”
Their compassionate actions have drawn widespread praise, with many believing that if more people in society extend such kindness, countless underprivileged children can find new hope and a better future.
