The number of AIDS patients in Bangladesh has surged, with 1,438 new cases identified in the past year, marking the highest increase in history. A total of 195 deaths have occurred, primarily among individuals aged 60 or older. The new infections primarily affect men (77%), followed by women (22%) and transgender individuals (1%). Most new cases (63%) are between 25 and 49 years old, and 55% of those infected are married. Testing efforts have expanded, with over 1.5 million tests conducted, revealing increased rates of infection among homosexuals, transgender people, and the Rohingya. Dr. Mahfuzar Rahman Sarkar from the Directorate General of Health Services emphasized that the rise in cases is due to more testing rather than an actual increase in infections. The highest number of new HIV cases is reported in Chittagong, with significant treatment provided to Rohingya refugees. Experts stress the need for non-discriminatory healthcare access for high-risk groups to prevent further spread.
