Sajeeb Wazed Joy is expected to visit India soon, according to a report by Indian media outlet News18. Quoting reliable sources, the report states that this visit will mark Joy’s first face-to-face meeting with former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since her departure from Bangladesh. As part of his trip, Joy is also likely to include a stop in Kolkata.
News18 further reports that Joy has recently obtained citizenship of the United States. After his Bangladeshi passport was canceled, he applied for a new American passport. His upcoming visit has sparked considerable interest among leaders of the Awami League who are currently in exile.
This development comes amid a tense political climate, as the country’s interim government has recently banned the Awami League and cancelled its official party registration. A former minister from the Awami League told News18, “We hope Joy will meet Sheikh Hasina and consult with other exiled leaders. The way the government has imposed a ban on the Awami League is absolutely unethical.” It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina has been living in India since August 5, 2024.
