Sanjay Raut, a Member of Parliament from Shiv Sena, stated, "All Bangladeshis should be removed from India, starting with Sheikh Hasina, who has found refuge here." His comments came after the Mumbai Police suspected that Saif Ali Khan's attacker was a Bangladeshi national.
Raut further remarked, "If the attacker is indeed from Bangladesh, the central government is to blame. Amit Shah is responsible and should resign." He also claimed, "Whenever we raise the issue of Bangladeshis in Parliament, the BJP silences us."
On January 16, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was attacked at his home in Bandra. Mumbai Police reported that Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad broke into the house with the intent to rob and stabbed Khan. However, Shehzad's lawyer, Sandeep Shekhan, argued, "The police have no proof that he is Bangladeshi." Shekhad's lawyer added that Shehzad, who went by the name Vijay Das, had been living in Mumbai for seven years.
