Hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists from 44 countries — including climate campaigner Greta Thunberg and Portuguese lawmaker Mariana Mortagua — are set to launch a large aid flotilla to Gaza on Sunday. Organized under the banner “Global Sumud Flotilla,” the convoy will depart from multiple Spanish ports, carrying humanitarian supplies in an effort to challenge Israel’s 15-year naval blockade of the Gaza Strip.
The flotilla will feature dozens of vessels with hundreds of participants onboard. Organizers, among them Palestinian activist Saif Abukeshek, have urged governments to ensure safe passage through the blockade.
This mission comes after previous attempts to breach the naval restrictions, including a June effort in which Israeli forces intercepted a Gaza-bound ship carrying Thunberg. The upcoming voyage is expected to be the largest civilian maritime initiative yet, aimed at both delivering aid and spotlighting the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
