A Greek island is offering free accommodation to volunteers in exchange for helping care for stray cats at local sanctuaries. The programme, based on Syros in Greece, requires participants to work from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., five days a week, with duties including feeding the cats, cleaning their shelters, and spending time caring for them.
In return, volunteers receive free accommodation, breakfast, and utilities on the Cycladic island, while covering their own travel and other meal costs. They must commit to at least one month of service.
The 2026 volunteer spots are already fully booked, with applications for 2027 expected to open in September. A co-founder of the initiative said the project aims to highlight that animals matter and reflect on how humanity treats them.
