Govt to Build Country’s First Defence Manufacturing Zone After India-Backed Project Is Cancelled

The government has decided to set up the country’s first defence manufacturing zone in Mirsarai, Chattogram, using land that was earlier allocated for a proposed Indian G2G economic zone, which has since been scrapped. Spanning about 850 acres, the zone will support local production of defence equipment with both domestic and foreign investment, while also permitting exports. Meanwhile, Bangladesh is preparing to establish its first free trade zone in Anwara on 600–650 acres, allowing duty-free storage, processing, and re-export of goods to boost the country’s role in global supply chains.
