In addition to the previously announced holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr, the government has decided to declare March 18 as a public holiday.
The proposal was approved at a cabinet meeting held today (Thursday) at the Secretariat, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. Earlier, March 17 was scheduled as a holiday for Shab-e-Qadr, making the total holiday period this year seven days, from March 17 to 23.
Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to fall on March 21. The Ministry of Public Administration had already set a five-day holiday from March 19 to 23 in advance, with March 21 being the official Eid day. This included two days before Eid (March 19–20) and two days after (March 22–23) as executive-declared holidays.
With the addition of March 18, the holiday before Eid now totals four days. Combined with Eid day and the following two days, the total holiday period for Eid this year will be seven days.
When leaving the cabinet meeting, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, Babi Hazzaz, confirmed to reporters the decision to declare March 18 a holiday.
