A new project has been launched on Saint Martin's Island in Cox's Bazar to generate electricity from waste and provide drinking water, as announced by Abul Monzur, Assistant Engineer of the Cox's Bazar Public Health Engineering Department. If successful, the project will help reduce environmental pollution and protect marine biodiversity, including coral reefs, as noted by environmentalists.
Sources from the department revealed that eco-friendly transportation, called Bekoteg, will be used to collect waste from the island to protect the environment and biodiversity while minimizing the negative effects of tourism. The island will also adopt integrated waste management through the Plasma Reactor to generate electricity from waste. With funding from the World Bank and collaboration with the Bangladesh government, the project will issue special ATM-like cards to residents, allowing them to access drinking water as needed.
