Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has clarified that there are no intentions to prohibit the Awami League from participating in the interim government. He made this statement on Thursday during a meeting with a delegation from the International Crisis Group. Addressing concerns on the matter, he reiterated, “There are no plans to impose a ban on the Awami League’s involvement in the interim government. However, any leaders within the party who have been accused of crimes such as murder and crimes against humanity, among other offenses, will face legal proceedings in Bangladesh’s courts.”
Additionally, Professor Yunus spoke about the government’s proposed election timeline, outlining two possible schedules. He explained, “If political parties agree to implement only limited reforms before the election, it will take place in December of this year. On the other hand, if a more extensive reform process is deemed necessary, then the election will be scheduled for June of next year. Regardless of the scenario, there is no justification for altering the election date.” He also reassured that the upcoming election would be conducted in a manner that is both “free and fair.”
