Google Pay is set to officially debut in Bangladesh within the next month, signaling a significant advancement in the country's digital financial ecosystem. At the initial stage, the service will be accessible exclusively to City Bank customers, who will be able to link their Visa and Mastercard accounts to Google Wallet. This will allow them to make contactless payments using Android smartphones equipped with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. Over time, the service is expected to expand to include other banks, making it more widely available across the country.
This new rollout will remove the need for previously used workarounds, offering users a direct and secure method for tap-and-go purchases. While Google Pay itself won’t need specific approval from Bangladesh Bank to operate, participating banks will still be required to notify the central bank before introducing the service. Most basic transactions made through Google Pay will be free of charge, although certain fees may be applied depending on the specific card or type of transaction.
