A gold trader, Anwar Hossain, was shot and stabbed by a group of unidentified armed men in front of his home in the Banasree area of Dhaka on Sunday night (23 February). The incident occurred around 10:45pm when a group of 5-6 men wearing helmets and riding motorcycles surrounded him. They shot and stabbed him before fleeing with his belongings, including two hundred bhoris of gold and Tk1 lakh.
Anwar was initially taken to Farayzi Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he was treated for bullet and sharp weapon injuries. According to Anwar, he had just finished closing his shop and was heading home when the attackers attempted to snatch his bag. Despite his resistance, one of the assailants shot him, while another stabbed him and took all his valuables.
Anwar's daughter, Farzana Akter, described how she heard gunshots and witnessed her father lying on the street after being shot six times and stabbed. She added that no one came to his aid, and she was trapped inside the building due to the locked gate. His wife, Panna Akther, expressed her grief over the situation, saying the locked gate prevented them from rescuing him immediately, and now Anwar is in critical condition in the ICU.
Local police, including Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ataur Rahman, confirmed the incident and stated that similar crimes had occurred in the Banasree area recently. Authorities have arrested suspects connected to those earlier incidents, including a prominent criminal, Mollah Sakib. Investigations are ongoing, with CCTV footage and videos from the scene being analyzed, and police are hopeful they will soon identify and capture the perpetrators.
