France is moving toward officially recognizing Palestine as an independent state within the coming months. President Emmanuel Macron shared that the country intends to lead a United Nations conference this June, in partnership with Saudi Arabia, where this recognition could be formalized. Macron highlighted the importance of building a unified international front—one in which countries that recognize Palestine would, in exchange, also recognize Israel. He described this approach as both timely and essential for advancing peace efforts. The Palestinian Foreign Minister welcomed France’s initiative, calling it a meaningful step toward safeguarding Palestinian rights and promoting the long-discussed two-state solution. This development reflects a major shift in France’s foreign policy; while France has long supported the concept of Palestinian statehood, this would mark the first time it takes formal action. However, Israel is likely to oppose the move, considering such recognition to be premature and potentially harmful to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
