Former NBR official Matiur Rahman and his first wife, Layla Kaniz, were arrested in Dhaka's Basundhara area by the Detective Branch in an ACC case. Allegations of illegal wealth and money laundering surfaced after a viral video of their son buying a Tk15 lakh goat before Eid-ul-Adha. The ACC launched inquiries, leading to Matiur's removal from NBR and attachment to the Finance Ministry's IRD. Several cases, involving illegal assets worth Tk126 crore, were filed against Matiur, his wives, and children. Layla is accused of acquiring Tk13.01 crore beyond known sources, while their daughter and son face charges for assets worth Tk53.41 crore and Tk42.22 crore, respectively, with Matiur named as an accomplice.
