Johnson & Johnson, the American pharmaceutical company, has developed a nasal spray aimed at improving mental health and reducing depression or anxiety. After extensive testing, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the spray.
According to Johnson & Johnson, when administered in precise doses, the nasal spray can help manage conditions like Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
Traditionally, doctors have prescribed various medications alongside counseling to treat depression, but long-term use of these medications often results in unwanted side effects.
Bill Martin, head of the Innovative Medicines division at Johnson & Johnson and a neurologist, explained that antidepressants can affect vital organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys, and may also impact reproductive health. To address this, the company has developed a nasal spray that requires only a small dose. Once sprayed, it directly stimulates the body’s neurotransmitters, boosting mental health as its effects take hold.
