Farooki Terms Nusraat Faria’s Arrest ‘Embarrassing’ for the Government
Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki has called the arrest of actress Nusraat Faria an “embarrassing incident” for the government.
In a Facebook post on Monday morning, Farooki expressed concern over the arrest, which took place on Sunday at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. Faria was detained by immigration police while en route to Thailand, based on an arrest warrant linked to a case filed at Bhatara Police Station. The case accuses her of attempted murder during the July uprising. She was later sent to jail following a court order by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka.
Farooki noted that the case had been pending for some time, yet authorities took no prior action against Faria until her sudden arrest at the airport. He suggested that the move may have been a reaction to growing public outrage over former Awami League president Abdul Hamid’s recent departure abroad.
He also mentioned a similar incident involving the wife of Barrister Andalib Partha and emphasized that such actions are “unacceptable.”
Farooki concluded by expressing hope that Faria would receive proper legal support and called for more sensitivity in handling politically charged or indiscriminate lawsuits. “Our main focus should be ensuring justice for the real perpetrators of July,” he wrote.
