Iranians wailed in grief and confusion as they gathered outside a makeshift morgue at the Kahrizak Forensic Medical Center, south of Tehran, attempting to identify the bodies of loved ones wrapped in black body bags. Some bodies were placed on walkways and open ground outside the facility, reflecting the overwhelming scale of casualties.
Footage from the site shows rows of body bags lining the area, with families desperately searching among them. Activist group Mamlekate said the number of bodies was so high that many had to be laid out in the courtyard due to lack of space.
Iranian state media acknowledged the disturbing scenes but claimed most of the deceased were “ordinary people” who were unintentionally caught up in the protests, placing responsibility for the deaths on so-called rioters.
