The High Court has acquitted former Home Minister Lutfuzzaman Babar of corruption charges, overturning an 8 year prison sentence imposed by a special judge. On October 23, Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollar announced the decision, with Advocate Shishir Monir representing Babar. Babar was initially sentenced on October 12, 2021, by Judge Shahidul Islam of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-7, after being arrested in 2007 during a caretaker government. A case filed by Mirza Zahidul Alam accused Babar of illegal asset acquisition, claiming he concealed assets totaling over Tk 7 crore. Despite the acquittal in this case, Babar remains incarcerated due to a death sentence in two other cases.
