Responding to India's concerns regarding the recent ban on the Awami League (AL), the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser stated on Tuesday that elections in Bangladesh are strictly an internal affair and emphasized the importance of respecting the nation's sovereignty.
In a Facebook post, he wrote, "We urge everyone to honor the sovereign will of our people when it comes to electoral matters." Referring specifically to India's remarks, he added, "The wounds inflicted by the crimes against humanity committed by this party remain fresh in our collective memory."
He went on to explain, "As I have previously stated, the decision to impose a ban on the activities of this party was taken to protect our national security and sovereignty, to ensure the safety of the activists of the July Movement, and to safeguard the plaintiffs and witnesses involved with the International Crimes Tribunal."
Additionally, he drew attention to the Awami League’s past conduct during elections, saying, "We remember how the Awami League repeatedly engaged in sham elections, causing serious and lasting damage to our electoral system and institutions. At present, we are committed to a reform process aimed at rebuilding our democratic framework."
