An elderly woman was killed, and several others injured in a stampede during an iftar distribution event in the Fakirhat area of Chattogram's Port Police Station yesterday. The victim, identified as 50-year-old Rokasana Begum, tragically lost her life in the chaos.
The incident took place in front of the residence of Abdul Razzak Chowdhury Masud, a businessman who regularly distributes iftar meals to low-income individuals. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Sultan Md Ahsan Uddin confirmed the details to The Daily Star. According to the OC, Masud typically delivers iftar items directly to people’s homes in Fakirhat before Ramadan, but this year, he chose to organize the distribution outside his house.
As hundreds of people gathered outside Masud’s residence for the distribution, the large crowd resulted in a stampede, leading to the fatality. Rokasana’s body was taken to the Chittagong Medical College morgue for an autopsy, and the OC stated that the body would be handed over to her family after the procedure. Legal action will be taken regarding the incident.
