Tensions escalated between doctors and the family of a patient who died in the cardiology department of Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
According to reports, Nurjahan Begum, 55, from Rangpur city, fell ill on Friday night and was taken to the hospital by her son, Rifat. Her family alleged that she died around 4 a.m. because she was not provided with oxygen in time. Doctors, however, claimed that the patient's relatives assaulted on-duty physicians after her death.
Following the incident, intern doctors went on strike in the emergency department and refused to release the body for 11 hours. They reportedly ignored requests from the hospital director to end the protest.
Later in the afternoon, the deceased's son, Rifat, was summoned to the hospital. Before the body was returned, he was allegedly forced to perform 10 sit-ups while holding his ears inside a room at the director's office.
A video of the incident later went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism. The hospital director described the incident as "highly condemnable."
