Stamatis Moraitis, a Greek man diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in the United States and given only six months to live, moved back to his remote home island of Ikaria. Instead of undergoing aggressive treatments, he embraced a slow, low-stress lifestyle, staying active and maintaining strong social connections. Over time, his health improved, and he lived for more than 40 years. Years later, when he returned to the U.S. to ask doctors how he had survived, he found they had all passed away. Moraitis attributed his long survival to Ikaria’s relaxed lifestyle, which included waking naturally, taking daily naps, and spending time talking with friends.
