A patient named Najma Begum reportedly died at Dhaka Medical College (Dhaka Medical College Hospital, DMCH) due to alleged medical negligence, sparking outrage among her relatives, who physically assaulted intern doctor Sakib Ahmed.
In protest, the hospital’s intern doctors closed the emergency department gate and suspended medical services, leaving patients seeking treatment stranded.
To control the situation, members of the army, RAB, and police arrived at the hospital. The incident occurred late Tuesday night (January 21) on the seventh floor of the new building’s medicine department.
Reports indicate that the female patient, from Kamrangirchar, Dhaka, died while receiving treatment in the new hospital building. Relatives claimed she passed away immediately after receiving an injection, prompting them to attack the doctor.
Confirming the incident, Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH hospital police outpost, said the patient’s body had been moved from the new building, and hospital authorities were informed. Following the incident, the patient’s relatives were reportedly taken to the police station.
