In a significant move aimed at enhancing both road safety and air quality, Dhaka authorities have declared a ban on buses that are more than 20 years old and trucks older than 25 years from operating within the city limits. This decision is part of a wider effort to tackle the increasing number of road accidents and the environmental damage caused by outdated and unfit vehicles. Currently, more than 75,000 such vehicles are still active across the country, many of which lack proper fitness certificates. The government has announced that, following the enforcement deadline, vehicles that fail to comply with the new regulations will be seized and dismantled. To ease the transition for vehicle owners, officials are also considering offering financial incentives and facilitating access to loans, allowing them to upgrade their fleets with safer and more eco-friendly alternatives.
